ADAPTATION B- THE FOUNTAIN OF FAIR FORTUNE

THE FOUNTAIN OF FAIR FORTUNE

"High on a hill in an enchanted garden, enclosed by tall walls and protected by strong magic, flowed the Fountain of Fair Fortune..." (JK ROWLING, The Tales of Beedle the Bard)

'The Fountain of Fair Fortune' is a short children's story from JK Rowling's collection of children stories in the novel 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard'. It is a story about three witches' quest to find their qualities to fulfil their hearts' desire, and the moral of the story is that you need only look to yourself to find it.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

"Then, Fountain of Fair Fortune is my favourite one, and that's really about the qualities you need to achieve your heart's desire, and the moral being that magic, ultimately, is not the best weapon."—J. K. Rowling

"There is an enchanted and enclosed garden that is protected by "strong magic." Once a year, an "unfortunate" is allowed the opportunity to find their way to the Fountain, to bathe in the water, and win "fair fortune forever more."Knowing that this may be the only chance to truly turn their lives around, people (with magical powers and without) travel from the far reaches of the kingdom to try and gain entrance to the garden. It is here that three witches meet and share their tales of woe. The first by the name Asha, was sick of a malady no healer could cure. She hoped that the fountain would banish her symptom and grant her a long and happy life.
The second by the name of Altheda, had been robbed of her home, her gold, and her wand by an evil sorcerer. She hoped the fountain might relieve her of her powerlessness and poverty.
The third by the name Amata had been deserted by a man whom she loved dearly and she thought her heart would never mend. She hoped that the fountain would relieve her of her grief and longing.
Pitying each other, the three women agreed that, should the chance befall them they would unite and try to reach the fountain together.
At first light, a crack in the wall appears and "Creepers" from the garden reach through and wrap themselves around Asha, the first witch. She grabs Altheda, who takes hold of Amata. But Amata gets tangled in the armour of a Muggle knight, and as the vines pull Asha in, all three witches along with the knight get pulled through the wall and into the beautiful garden."

They face various challenges and meet different characters, and find out more about themselves on the journey to find the fountain, and ultimately each realise in the end they no longer need the fountain of fortune, and just as well , as unknown to the characters, the Fountain of Fair Fortune possesed no magical qualities at all.

The Fountain of Fair Fortune

I am drawn to this story for the Adaptation B project because of the moral, and also the interesting characters. The are 3 main witches who are all very different to each other, and a knight. There is already no visual on what they should look like, just descriptions of their qualities, their personalities and their desires. I think it would be interesting to create and design these characters from nothing but the knowledge of their personalities and their desires. The book has only one thumbnail size illustration of the characters.

I am also drawn to this story because it is full of magic and beautiful scenery, which would also be interesting to explore and design. It has many elements to design, such as the creatures found there, the descriptive enchanted garden and the fountain, it is also full of symbolism.
